The Kool Kids

Elke week kun je een uitgebreid verslag verwachten van een artiest/dj(-duo) of een band, gepresenteerd door jullie Kool Kids. Deze week is er een verslag over Kroenen.

Kroenen is een Duitse producer, bij wie de invloeden van Daft Punk en Justice heel erg terug te vinden zijn. Hij is laat zich van meerdere kanten zien, met zowel rauwe, krakende Electro sounds als ook old school French House tracks. Hoewel deze artiest uit Keulen komt, doet hij je erg denken aan de typische French Touch sound.

Kroenen is niet zomaar iemand die, zoals zovelen, van die standaard bangers poduceert. Achter zijn artiest schuilt een hele gedachte. Zijn verschijning is een zwart pak met een soort gasmasker, zijn muziek is een hele opbouwing en van tevoren uitgewerkt; alles draait om de duistere, mysterieuze figuur die Kroenen is.

Verder is er nog weinig bekend of deze artiest, die, als hij enige bekendheid krijgt, het ver kan schoppen en een perfecte act kan zijn voor festivals en concerten, zoals men die kent met artiesten als Daft Punk.

Is Kroenen Kool?

Kroenen, the guy with the evil K in his name, is more than kool, he is the koolest kid in your blog!

So Mr. Kroenen, introduce you, and speak us about your project.

Yes, first of all, thanks a lot for this beautiful chance. Projects like your blog are very important for the musicians out there, which aren’t so famous like the Ed Banger Crew!

My Name is Felix Christian Berner and I’m a German designer (http://www.felixberner.com) and musician. I was born 1986 in Germany, Cologne and I started making music in 1999. Making music is for me more a hobby than a job. I’m earning my money with my designs so I’m an absolute uncommercial artist haha!

Kroenen is an Evil Nazi character of the film Hell Boy. He represents the evil part of my own character. So I’m trying to create self ironic evil music with a kind of German strength into it. My first artist name was Phantom Sky but after a while of creating my stuff, I wanted a new name. After looking the Film Hell Boy,
I was so fascinated of the enemy Karl Ruprecht Von Kroenen, that I renamed my project into Kroenen!

Can you explain your MySpace title « KROENEN (Phantom Sky) – Who the fuck is Justice? »

I’m blocked by Justice on Myspace haha! A long time ago, I was a great fan of Justice. On my left arm, I have inked the Christian triangle symbol (with the keyhole in it) and I still love their music. But with the time, I realized how arrogant and normal these guys are and that they are sampling too much songs, so I started to dislike them! Justice has become a teeny band and after there DVD, where one of them is having sex with every groupie and the other guy is so strange that u do not know if he is gay or not, I decided to question “Who the fuck is Justice?”

Why do you wear a gaz mask?

My friend, this is not a gaz mask. This is a very expensive fibreglass replicate of the Kroenen film mask. It makes me mysterious and also keeps my real identity secret.

How would you define your sound?

Very dirty, evil, self ironic and also melodic. My songs are telling stories. On one hand you can rock and dance to the sounds but on the other hand your can just close your eyes and listen to the music,
which makes you see films in your imagination!

What are your influences/inspirations, when you create your tracks?

Daft Punk, yes… Justice… SebastiAn… Ed Banger crew, but also many unknown artists I found on Myspace!

What purpose do you look for, when you compose music? What do you want to tell to your auditors?

First of all, I make the music for my own pleasure. I often said that I’m my greatest fan haha! If I’m able to freak out by listening to my own music, I know that the song is great enough to be kick ass for my audience!

You made often references to the evil, why? How would you define it?

Felix Berner in the normal life out there, or Felix as designer is a very peaceful and friendly guy. But every human has an animal-like powerful and evil nature, a part of the character that is still in us… And this part is represented in Felix by wearing the evil mask of Kroenen!

Of what does your studio consist?

I use a Synth, a Roland T-909, Garageband and Ableton!

Do you have future projects?

Yes. Because I’m also a designer and director, I’ll try to make music clips to some of my own songs!
Also, I planned to become better and better, to be famous like Daft Punk in future haha. And I will work on some remixes and new songs that are already constructed in my imagination!

What’s your dream in making music?

To have the same prestige like my idols Daft Punk! To rock concerts and to touch my fans with my music!
