Interview with Dem Slackers

There’s nothing wrong with patriotism. And as our fellow Dutchmen and friend Dem Slackers performed at the Boys Noize Record stage during Mysteryland, we felt doing an interview with the brain behind newest banger ‘Global Grind’
And so we did, we spoke about lots of subject from his experience while playing in front of hundreds of people till Dubstep. As not only we learned him better we give you here by a piece of text which will you update about the current status of Dem Slackers. So here we go:

So how you’re doing?
Pretty good man, I just opened at Boys Noize Record stage at Mysteryland it was pretty good, it was pretty sweet to do.

You mentioned on Facebook that your Lowlands gig was even more special than the time you played in Ibiza next to Tiesto, how do you feel about this one?
Well I opened here so I couldn’t really expect a huge crowd to be here when I started here, because obviously people were just entering the place. The Lowlands gig was the best gig of my life and it was also the biggest crowd I’ve ever played for, so you can’t really compare it to Lowlands. But then again there’s nothing to compare with lowlands

What is it about Lowlands that makes it so special for you?
It’s everything, because I’m Dutch Lowlands has always been one of my biggest goals to achieve as DJ and now succeeded , it feels so good. It’s amazing and it’s strange to know that it’ll be the biggest gig of your life before playing and then afterwards it is indeed the biggest gig of my life. So everything around it and the gig itself that makes it so amazing.

Even though you reached this specific goal, are there any new goals?
Yeah I wanna do Electric Daisy Carnival in Las vegas, obviously, because that’s like the biggest thing on the planet, I guess. So it’s not like that I have goals besides going to America and enjoy there. I just came back of Australia where I did a three week tour, what was pretty awesome and I’m going back there in January and February so the next year is about flying out it’s going to be totally amazing.

Do you agree that you’re going to the same sort of Journey as the ‘Mightyfools’?
I Think Mightyfools got big with the fidget hype though you know with the heavy electro sounds. Because I’m changing my style now and wasn’t so big with the fidget stuff, I Think the new fans only see the commercial stuff. I just like to incorporate vocals in my tracks. It makes it always better and gets girls sing along. That’s pretty neat.

What’s your current status?
Like I said i’d like to add vocals to my tracks some like epic, some like melodic breakdowns, but still heavy bass-drops, because that’s what Dem Slacker is for. It’s good to use a lot of synths and chords and everything to get the crowd really hyped up, to evolve them in the track and that emotional feeling during a heavy bass-drops.

We noticed that you use a lot of Mord Fustang tracks in your sets, is that something you really go for?
I do really like his tracks, but it’s mainly something that I want to play out. I’m not going to make that type of house. It’s more like the old school electro house with the different synths and stuff. It’s a cool style though, but not for me.

In what genre would you place your music?
I’d say it’s in between Pop music and Dance music, as we call it nowadays, you know like the commercial club music plus heavy bass-lines and stuff. You could probably say it’s a bit Bassjacker like. Because they have like big brakes and still filthy drops. And that’s what I try to do as well I want to hype up the crowd and reach them emotionally, I really try to put emotion in my tracks. In the end I’m still about bass.

So as we talk about genres, do you like dubstep?
I enjoy Dubstep, I can’t really listen to an hour or half our set of it, but for five-teen minutes or so. I did play after Skrillex at Lowlands and I can assure you he killed it, he murdered the crowd.

What sets Skrillex apart of the other Dubstep DJ’s?
I think because he’s a little commercial in the Dubstep scene. He uses a lot of cheesy vocals and really catchy moves from the break down and obviously the drops are just all the same haha, but it works! If you get girls to sing a long and people begin to know your melodies of your song and still are able going nuts to them, that’s what you got to have. And that is what I want. That’s what Dance music is all about in the end isn’t it?

As Dubstep seems to grow bigger and bigger, more and more artists start to produce tracks with Dubstep-ish sounds in it, like these wobbles Martin Solveig uses in “Ready to go” Are you in to that?
I don’t really like it, you can clearly hear he putted in there, because Dubstep is getting big I think. If it actually makes your track better..okay fair enough, but if it’s just random there just because of the fact the genre is getting popular and there has to be dubstep in, nah I don’t like that. It has to make the track better. In the Martin Solveig song for example, I really like the song, but the Dubstep part is unnecessary.

On the internet there are wild speculations that it’ll be the new house, afraid of that?
Well like you said more and more artists such as Porter Robinson, Zedd are using these Dubstep changes and synths in their tracks that’s just really America and it’s going to comeback here as well it was really popular here four years ago. Dubstep is definitely gonna stay for the very few days and I do believe it’s gonna grow even more. You can already hear on the television that it’s used in commercials.
But House is never going to die. It’s always that main thing that is there it’ll keep changing but I think you can’t hold on on one style. Besides that I realize I can’t do that as well, maybe I’ll be producing Dubstep because I’m really into it. You’re just have to enjoy live and get drunk!

How’s it like to be a well known 19-year old DJ?
Haha it’s pretty cool! Every time you tell some other person or DJ who doesn’t know I’m 19 always react like: “O my god, I feel so old!” That’s basically the only reaction I get. Besides the only thing I really noticed of it is when the media writes or talks about me like ‘The young dude he’s only 19-year old dude’ but other than that it’s not really special. When you hang out with other DJ’s it’s not like ‘he’s the young dude’ you just become friends.

And what about school, regarding your age?
It’s just nice I get to grow old so fast, you become very quick really independent. Because I’m going away all the time, when I’m in Australia I’ll be there for three weeks on my own in a hotel room. That’s pretty much it.

What is it like to be the first performer on the Boy Noize Records stage?
It’s pretty cool to play at that stage as is it obviously a I played some tunes from the guys that will play after me, so I guess it’s a big honor. But like I said it’s always hard to be the first DJ the people just enter the festival you got to adapt and play some known tunes, not really my thing but I don’t mind it. It’s is really different from the sets I normally play, I like to smash the crowd with bangers!

As you played on the BNR stage, is there maybe something going on?
Hahah no man, I mix everywhere. At the moment we’re kinda shopping for a new label, because I’m doing the more commercial stuff. But it’s not that important you choose the label release an EP from so that’s not a problem at all for me. I do make some bootlegs (for Calvin Harris) to keep the fans warm.

Talking about BNR, you seem to get lots of support of Bart B More?
We live really close near each other and we already made a collab together, but we had some issues with the melody and stuff. But I’m sure we’re gonna make some more tunes in the future!

Are there any current influences?
Ehmm..Bee Gees and like I said I like Mord Fustang, although I am not going to make exact that kind of music.

And of course our final question. What makes you so Kool?
I have to say my swag. Definitely my swag, I need an extra seat for my Swag hahah.

Not so long ago we did an interview with upcoming Belgian DJ’s Supreems! We’re pleased to introduce these two young men from Antwerp to you.

Supreems is a fresh (superfresh) collaboration between Xavier and William AKA Trixx & Wllr. After 3 years of bedroom deejaying, sneaking on to every big party having a good sniff of all the wild and different musical tastes, they decided they had enough of the practicing and wanted bigger, so they bound their powers to raise Supreems!

First of all, can you introduce yourself for the people that don’t know you yet?
We are Supreems, a young deejay duo hailing from Antwerp. We’ve been deejaying together since 2008 and hope to be for a long time to come. We’ve played at venues such as 10 Days Off, Kissinger, Laundry Day, etc… and this year we were very honored that Fanklub Deejays chose us to be resident at this year’s season of Blast Your Ghetto ! Which has already invited names such as Gesaffelstein, Zombie Nation, Rex The Dog, Renaissance Man, The Hacker, Teki Latex, Joost Van Bellen, Das Glow, and so on. So we are very proud to have our name in between this list. We try to deliver a mixtape every season of the year, and we have been getting some real good comments on them so feel free to check some of them out on our Soundcloud!

Why the name Supreems?
Well unlike most other names and deejays giving an entire story attached to their names, we have absolutely no idea.

So you’re based in Antwerp, is the Belgium scene or Antwerp in particular important to you?
We are mostly attracted to the Antwerp scene. There are a lot of cool party’s and concepts going on here, with a wide variety of genres. There is Flying Saucers Are Real, taking you on a journey to outer space with music you haven’t heard before. Kissinger, organized by some very nice people who always make sure you have a good night with some pretty cool artists, NOORD feesjes, and of course Blast Your Ghetto, with an atmosphere that is hard to find these days. We know there are also other good concepts outside of Antwerp, but if we have this, why leave?

What are the main genres you like to play?
It mostly depends on the venue we play at, but of course we stick to the things we like. We’ve been really into chicago house and house music in general lately. When we say house, we are not talking about ‘swedish house maffia’ or Defected House kind of music, but we’re talking about artists like Tanner Ross, Huxley, Manuel Tur, etc… We also like to play some electro, more funky, italo -disco and french house. If you listen to the mixtape below, you will understand what we’re talking about.

We can enjoy a lot of sets from you guys, but are you also thinking about producing? What’s more important to you?
Producing for us isn’t that important at the moment, but sadly it is really hard to have a lot of gigs (if any) without making your own music. We still think producing skills shouldn’t automatically lead to thinking this producer a good deejay, but sadly it does today. And apparently these tracks don’t even have to be that good anymore, just some drums and a heavy bassline and people go nuts today. We’ve recently started producing, but are still trying to find our own sound and the direction we want to go to, and we hope we can make music that is more than just drums and basslines. The ideas are there, now we have to try and make the computer turn our ideas into real tracks!!

What are you currently busy with? Any plans?
We recently finished our newest mixtape for Switch, which got aired on Studio Brussels and we received lots of good comment on that one. We’ve tried to take it somewhere else than most deejays do and we’re really happy with the result. Besides tracking down new music and partying, we’re also trying to finish our first couple of tracks. Now that it’s summer, we’re forcing ourselves to stay inside every couple of days and work on them, and it’s really starting to take some shape.

Are there any favourite and talented Belgium producers/DJ’s we should know about?
When playing at BYG in May, Fanklub Deejays invited Pleasure Machines to come and play with us. We really think these guys have a kool and fresh sound, playing italo disco and nu disco, these guys from Liège know how to make you feel like a love machine when playing. We also really love the work Villa gives us, and The Magician is also an artist we should be very proud of. Also props to our friends Bafana from Ghent, and Orwell.

As we’re called The Kool Kids, what makes you so Kool?
We try not to follow the big hypes that are going on right now, but just keep playing what we like to hear instead of what the majority of people wants to hear. Don’t know whether that makes us Kool, but hey we try

Fancy boy Le Castle Vania is showing some activity again. After his “Nobody Gets Out Alive” release we haven’t heard much from him, but now he’s finally showing a sign of productions that are done. The lad from Atlanta made a second Bulletproof Tiger Mixtape, which has some new and exciting sounds.

I’m actually seriously starting to think that the guy has a fear to flight, because he still hasn’t partied and played in Europe (and especially Holland) as far as I can remember. We might have to do an interview soon and discuss it, if you guys are ok with that.

Biography

For people that don’t know Dylan Eiland a.k.a. Le Castle Vania that well yet, here’s the bio:
“Atlanta based and internationally known, Le Castle Vania, commonly known as Dylan Eiland, quickly escaped the local trappings of his hometown in Georgia to play music around the world. Atlanta’s burgeoning music scene allowed him to develop his passion for music and nightlife, and he soon gained notoriety with his riotous DJ sets and penchant for production, which made him a household name in the dirty and distorted, indie-electro scene.

Since the summer of 2006, Le Castle Vania has toured nonstop, taking his catchy electro dance beats on the road. He blurs the lines between cultures and cliques, from Mexico City to London Town, with his own signatory sound. He has DJed along side some of today’s hottest acts, such as Justice, MSTRKRFT, Simian Mobile Disco, Busy P, Uffie & Feadz, Kavinsky, Soulwax, Surkin, Para One, The Presets, Steve Aoki and Crystal Castles. However, Dylan prides himself on more than simply pushing vinyl for the masses. He’s also an avid producer and engineer; when not on the road he’s locked in the studio writing tracks from scratch and remixing his favorite bands. The attention he received from his remix of “Black Eyes” by Indie darlings Snowden (Jade Tree Records), quickly put Dylan on the map, the track continues to rock dance floors worldwide.

His signature sound blends grinding disco punk with strong electronic beats and catchy synth leads, resulting in banging electro music that is dark and dirty but somehow equally uplifting and dancey. New mixes to check out include Tigertron, an original work off of his first non-remix release, “Troubletron EP,” and remixes of “Come Out” for 120 days (Vice Records) and “Bombs” for Scanners (Dim Mak Records), which have all received critical appraisal from the indie electro world.

URB Magazine included Le Castle Vania in their Next 100 for 2008, NYLON and Jane Magazine absolutely demand he play at their events. Fader, Flavorpill and BigStereo have all “raved” about his remixes. It’s clear this is a talent not to be dismissed, for Le Castle Vania is sure to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue and his sounds to be banging in everyone’s heads throughout 2008.

His most recent creative endeavour is one part musical production, one part DJ performance, one part Blake Miller of Moving Units/Weird Science notoriety, and numerous parts of innovation…namely Lies In Disguise. After finding a home at So Sweet Records and cranking out some original tracks and remixes for Partyshank and Toxic Avenger, these two have gained notoriety as the up-and-comers to keep your eye on. They are currently working on remixes for Shinichi Osawa and Late of the Pier and are gearing up for a DJ tour to Mexico and Europe.”

Here’s what he has to say about the mixtape:

“This is the follow up to my first mixtape The Bulletproof Tiger Mixtape Vol.1. As with the first mixtape i tried not to over think it too much and just selected some of my favorite songs from my own catalog, some stuff from my friends, and some stuff from a few new comers that i have been feeling. This mix also contains tons of brand new and exclusive material including 2 unreleased singles “Awake” and “The Light” as well as exclusive unreleased remixes that I have done of D.I.M.’s Is You and John Lord Fonda’s Sound Of A Melody. Check it out…”

“The Toxic Avenger, a.k.a. Simon Delacroix, is an electro thrash producer hailing from Paris, France. Taking cues from intelligent hardcore and punk, all the way to 60’s pop, The Toxic Avenger brings us a unique blend of melodic rage and screaming synths that create a sonic epic audiences can lose their minds to.
Toxic has come a long way since 2007’s Superheroes release. Where we last left off, our hero’s shimmering, distortioned riffs called for a new generation of dance staples. The colorful and hopeful single became the theme to Toxic’s rise to power, and helped shape the standards to which we have come to know in the electro community.

Toxic is Dead, the first single from the “Angst” LP release (due April 2011), continues to propel the ever-growing mystique of the man behind the mask. Far from deceased, the Toxic Avenger’s ghostly orchestrations and pulsating rhythms, not to mention his colossal bass lines combine for a dangerous and deadly etherealness that is sure to slay dancefloors around the world straight into the afterlife. Additionally, eccentrics Drop the Lime and heavy hitters South Central provide their talents on remixes that further project the dark evolution of our once Superhero turned sinister.

Previously hailed as one of Rolling Stone’s Artists To Watch, The Toxic Avenger has secured a place as one of the top electro producers, and has provided his signature touch on a number of remixes for artists such as Ladytron, Late of the Pier, Chromeo, and IHC labelmates Heartsrevolution. Additionally, he has performed worldwide with a slew of respectable artists including MSTRKRFT, Late of the Pier, Black Lips, Yelle, The Teenagers, Vitallic, and the infamous Public Enemy.

The Toxic Avenger is currently on tour worldwide, playing in clubs and at festivals from Paris to Melbourne.
In April this year he will release his first LP titled “Angst”.”

Nu Rocker is an artist based in The Netherlands. His influences vary from Rock, Electro, House, Disco, Dubstep and Drum & Bass. His biggest influence is Daft Punk.

Started getting involved in the scene at age 16, he’s met many famous artists and gained a lot of experience and inspiration, which is now to be brought into public.

His idea behind “Nu Rocker” is to create a perfect collision between Rock and Dance music, which, in his opinion, is to be found in Electro. That’s why he wants to create a new kind of Rock, hence “Nu Rocker”. It may be in the sound, it may be in the image or it may be in the vibe.

So far he made 1 track and 1 mix public. The first track called “Beginning Of The End” is a Maximal/Electro track which is based on noise, electric guitars, some rage and above all a lot of energy to create a very hard track, which is to be the beginning of a crusade.

Beginning Of The End by Nu Rocker

The first mixtape called “Start-Off Mixtape” entails the very start of the stuff Nu Rocker has to offer you. 31 tracks mixed in 70 minutes, in which you will find several genres that the Dutch artist likes and that influence him. The music varies from Electro to Electro House to French House to Dubstep. It surely is 70 minutes of party hard music!

Jaimie Fanatic, believe it or not, started out being a techno dj for many years. At the time the repetitive drum programming got him bored and he switched to a more house type of music. Now after many years of producing Indie Electro tracks he gets back to his roots and gives us “Photobook”. A simple but beautiful repetitive Techno tune that goes deeper than anything he has ever done before. This track has immediately got support from Techno king Angel Alanis, who will deliver a remix when the remix bundle is due for release. For now, the original is pre-released for an exclusive 2 week period on Beatport as of 2nd of September.

Extra note from Fanatic – “I’m going to make a new mixtape today and am only going to share it with the people that can prove they bought my new single “Photobook” on Beatport… The mix will be filled with exclusive new promos from artists worldwide.” To get the mix follow him on Twitter.
