Today a great artist among us has passed away. Tunisian DJ and producer Mehdi Favéris-Essadi, better known as DJ Mehdi, has passed away during a party at his house in Paris when his roof collapsed. Mehdi died at age 34. Our condolences go out to everyone that has loved him and share this loss, especially Fafi, the Ed Banger crew, Riton and the other artists and people involved in the scene.

The first time I got in contact with DJ Mehdi was probably with the Signatune track, which of course got a lot of attention through the Thomas Bangalter (half of Daft Punk) Edit. I can also remember his set at Sonar 2007 quite well, which has been in my top list of mixes for a long time. Or perhaps it was his track “I am Somebody” featuring Chromeo which resembles DJ Mehdi most. Well, you were man, you were somebody. And you still are, as DJ Mehdi will not be forgotten for his tracks and of course also the collaboration with Riton as Carte Blanche, which made a stunning second EP release not so long ago.

Mehdi came from the Hip-hop, got in touch with Electro as he met friends like Daft Punk, Cassius and of course Busy P from Ed Banger Records. He had gotten a lot into the House genre lately and his mixes were getting better by the month. For those party moments, mixes, tracks and happy feelings, we thank Mehdi Favéris-Essadi.

In anticipation of the intense night you are almost sure of to experience, we’ve had a little talk with Aziz a.k.a. L’Azzizi (who will also play at the event). He’s the guy behind the Révolt events and responsible for this party.

Who or what is Aziz?

Aziz aka L’Azizzi is DJ, Executive Supervisor in the nightculture and marrocan, and that all in one! Also known as the cultural troublemaker/rebel/hooligan/yahoo since the scene left the crack of the door open to him.

When someone wants to hang out with you, what can he/she expect?

Free entrance and drinks all night long. No guarantee to get back to the hotel though.

What’s your favourite night out?

If the interaction between the crowd and the music is like the one between me and the girl next door, those are the nights that work for me the best. If it’s the right timing, beautiful things might happen.

How much do you love Rotterdam?

I would give up my 1971 450 SLC and never eat KFC nor download any movie again to be in this city. My life would be over If I had too chose between that and Rotterdam. Thank god I don’t have to.

What kind of stuff do you do in the city of Rotterdam?

Besides DJ’ing I try to be creative wit finding unique spots and gather some cool crowds to go nuts on the music that’s doing it for me right now. We did some crazy nights in movie theaters, brothels, closed animal farms (nothing unethical), parking terminals and crazy locations you wouldn’t think of for a party.

How important is are Revolt events to you?

For now Révolt is doing some amazing things. Thanks to Mojo concerts there’s a blazing line up on the 29th of April in Rotterdam. There are 4 big rooms in an old factory that used to stock grain. There’s even one room on the tenth floor looking over the whole city.

If you had to describe or express the crazyness of organising such an extraordinary event like this…

First of all the line up is arranged thanks to Mojo concerts and after that’s it’s a smooth ride. People are talking about it for months and with only 2 weeks to go I can’t find the rights words to describe the crazyness. I keep daydreaming and reminiscing about Soulwaxmas (2008, at the same location). It’s going to be hard!

Where can we get tickets?

I’ll let you guys decide who to please with 2 guestlist spots and otherwise go to livenation.nl and look for Révolt.

Can you tell us where the afterparty is for Révolt?

I can promise you that there will be one. I’m playing for 6hours and there should be some kind of hadliner playing there too (I think).

What are your plans for the coming year?

Well Révolt is planning on to do some cool stuff. There are talks for an outdoor edition on top of a closed train station and another edition before the end of the year. Also I’m working on some cool collaborations and I’ll make sure to keep you guys informed.

What’s your best gig so far?

Closing at Soulwaxmas is by far the nr 1. I hope this show will return to Holland soon.

Who’s the sickest dude out there according to you?

Pffff there are many…. even local heroes are amazing me with the stuff they bring nowadays. If you’d put a gun against my head and made me choose I would go for Giorgio Moroder. I would love to have him play at Révolt some time.

Persoonlijke opvallers zitten vooral in het middengedeelte van de mix. De nieuwe D.I.M., een lekkere Miike Snow remix, een Boris Dlugosch remix van Boys Noize, een heerlijke remix van Supercake 53 van Zombie Nation, De Tiga remix van Boys Noize’s Transmission (wordt binnen enkele dagen gereleased), de nieuwe track van Hey Today! – die mij persoonlijk aan een mix van The Brainwasher/Satisfaction/Fukkk Offf/Arpeggio/SebastiAn doet denken – en natuurlijk Computer Juice van Riton, die aanwezig is bij de aankomende Rauw New Stijl!

Hoewel het mixen matig te noemen is – sommige tracks lopen niet synchroon bijvoorbeeld – moet je deze mix zeker beluisteren, vanwege een overvloed aan nieuwe muziek!

Mickey Moonlight – Interplanetary Music (Riton Remix)

Ik heb het misschien al wel eens eerder over Riton gehad, maar omdat ik deze week een erg vette remix van hem tegenkwam toch nog even wat info.

Riton is electronica DJ en producer Henry Smithson. Na zijn study in Newcaslte begon hij met draaien en werd daar ontdekt door Mark Rae, die hem vervolgens een contract aanbood bij Grand Central Recods. In 2001 bracht hij zijn eerste album uit “Beats Du Jour”, en in 2004 de opvolger “Homies and Homos”. In 2008 bracht Riton onder de alias ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’ een gelijknamig album uit met warme hypnotiserende synths die je meevoerden op een soort ruimtereis. Niet alleen door de muziek, maar ook door prachtig beeld (klik).

Riton maakt tegenwoordig ook een hoop gave remixes voor bijvoorbeeld ‘Holy Fuck’, ‘The Mystery Jets’ en ‘Hercules and Love Affair’. Mijn favoriet is de Mickey Moonlight remix. Download hem hier!

Ken je The Presets? John F Dennedy Munk is een up-coming band uit Nederland die qua muziek qua muziek elementen wegheeft van The Presets. Bevallen The Presets je, beluister John F Dennedy Munk ook eens.

DJ Dlg – Paramount (Rogerseventytwo Remix)

Hoewel deze track al redelijk oud is, vond ik hem pas kortgeleden dankzij een vriend. En meteen was ik verliefd op de waanzinnige remix van Hagenees Rogerseventytwo, de ene helft van het duo The Walk & Rogerseventytwo. De synths zijn amazing en de uitstekend passende vocals zijn zelfs zo heerlijk dat deze track net zo goed op het nieuwe album van Daft Punk gevonden zou kunnen worden. Rogerseventytwo maakt van het orgineel een geheel nieuwe track, die eigenlijk nog en eens als remix bestempeld mag worden.

Tesla Boy – Spirit of the Night

Wohoo 80′s feeling!
De Russische band Tesla Boy geeft me het meest retro gevoel ooit. De synths lang en catchy, en de teksten simpel maar prachtig. Als ik op dit moment een groep in mn achtertuin zou willen hebben wist ik het wel
Merk zelf ook dat ik de laatste tijd steeds meer let op de vocals en de synths dan op de beat,
Baby baby baby van Make the girl dance vind ik dan ook geweldig.

DatA – Rapture (The Chimney Climbers Remix)

De remix van Chimney Climbers op het bekende nummer van de franse DatA. Een heerlijk nummer met de daarin welbekende stem die ook het nummer one in a million van datA zo lekker maakt. Aankomende zaterdag (23 mei) is dé kans om DatA live te zien in de Tivoli te Utrecht op het maandelijkse feest DumDum van Boemklatsch. Voor alle fans dus een aanrader om heen te gaan!

Het geheel is te bekijken op www.einekleinenachtmusik.tv, en ik raad je ook aan het daar te bekijken. Dit is een stuk betere kwaliteit dan youtube. Persoonlijk vind ik dat hij een erg sterk stukje muziek heeft afgeleverd met daarbij nog een interessante film.
