Now that STRP Festival has ended, we are very interested in all the recaps flying around the internet.

First of all we’d like to show you an amazing video done by our friend Mark Loonen. This video is a great capture of the Soulwaxmas party, one of the highlights this year at STRP Festival. Let’s enjoy!

Next to that Soulwax had their own aftermath too:

As you can see this is a party you would feel lucky to attend, and if you missed it you’re probably very sorry.
Our Italian ciccio’s from The Bloody Beetroots will be visiting our fair country again. This friday one the cornerstones of the new Electro era will be playing in a sold-out Melkweg venue in Amsterdam and on November 20th they will be one of the headlines of the STRP Festival in Eindhoven. After their successful Death Crew 77 tour, they will now be presenting their new project called “Church of Noise”, in which Dennis Lyxzén, ex-singer of Swedish hardcore punk band Refused, will be joining the crew.

“Sell out of settle that’s the choices that we get
They tell us that it’s useless to even fight back
But It only takes five fingers to form a fist,
It only takes one thought to rise up and resist,
It only takes a sound to change the beaten path
And It only takes love and courage to take it all back.

Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo & Dennis Lyxzén

Church Of Noise is coming soon…”

Expect more Punk and Rock & Roll than you’ve seen of them before. This show is going to be a hard one.
Von Rosenthal De La Vegaz will open the night with his set of classical pieces of art in music.
After the Bloody Beetroots show their will be a special afterparty at Melkweg, with highly anticipated DJ’s such as TWR72, for which tickets are still available. More info is to be found on the Melkweg site.

The Russian soldier from Moscow, Proxy, is known for his terrifying sounds since the first time he dropped his classic “Raven“. Currently signed to Turbo Recordings, he will release his first album on the label, formed by Thomas Von Party and Tiga.

Background

On the Myspace page of Proxy’s you can find more info about the mysterious artist:
“From the ashes of the Soviet empire, from the flames of history, rises Proxy. Post 9/11 rave vibes cloaked in Muscovite angst. A line drawn in smoking rubble along the border dividing East and West, Stüssy and Spetsnaz. 1997. The Year of Tar and Horses. The Prodigy plays Red Square in Moscow. Hundreds of thousands of people attend the show, but only one is truly changed. By the crushing sound. By people absolutely losing their shit to synths and sustained aggression.

The experience causes Proxy to question the quality and purpose of Russian “electrica” acts like Nu-Lag Xpressions and Sweatislav. There was simply no scene from which to emerge. “Whatever a fool does, he does it wrong. A poor dancer is impeded even by his own balls,” he recalls. In a decade’s time, Proxy would be remixing Prodigy and opening for them on a massive tour of Russia. 2004. Proxy grows interested in the increasingly punishing sounds of the electro scene, as he hears Tiga sing “Hey You Little Children of Glasnost” at the W Hotel in Anzhero-Sudzhensk.

2006. Proxy reaches out to Tiga via his MySpace page. Thomas Von Party intercepts the message and is stunned by fully formed landmines like “Destroy”. Masquerading as Tiga, he signs Proxy to Turbo Recordings, beginning his own deceit-fueled ascent up the biz-ladder of the music ladder-business. 2007 to present. Proxy earns respect and awe from such heavyweights as Justice, Soulwax, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan and Mr. Oizo with astonishing, severe tracks like “Decoy”, “Dance in Dark” and the massive “Raven”, which merits special mention not just because of its ubiquity, but because it illustrates in full the singular power of Proxy music.

Recall, if you will, the first time you were ever caught in an explosion. Close enough to the blast that the only things that register are a light beyond blinding and a sound that arrives too soon. Now imagine that as you lose your body to the fire you are reassembled, better, your self subsumed by something far greater (for many, this experience seems to manifest itself as sitting in obedient unison). The sound now commands you, transmuting you into the screaming, searing blare.

Proxy has also produced remixes for Peaches, Prodigy, Tiga, Boys Noize, Chromeo, Digitalism, Moby and a host of others willing to pay him in Kocmoc cigarettes. The coming months will see him co-headline a huge New Year’s Eve show with Soulwax in Australia and embark on his first North American tour, which will include shows at major festivals. As rumor fills the Earth of the impending release of his debut album, Proxy demurs, “I hear it, and it’s mine, and you stay away from me,” before reluctantly conceding that it will drop in 2010. “My music tells you what to do, but never why. Your ear may be afraid, but your body completes its labor.” “

Album

After some delay, the album will be released somewhere near the end of this year, Thomas Von Party said in an interview. “The Proxy album is a big event… Very delayed, but that one also somewhere around winter, maybe.” At first Proxy and Turbo Recordings set sail to release the album around the end of May, but they had their reasons for the delay. “The reason for the delay is very simple. Once you set a goal to yourself of making an album, just because you have enough tracks for an album, that doesn’t necessarily mean you want to put it out there as an album. You only release so many things, so you want to have it set up for yourself, so that it has a real impact when it drops. And for the Proxy, for a lot of reasons it just hasn’t quite been finished. He’s working on it and there’s a lot of great material that is going to be released.”

This doesn’t mean that the Russian artist is staying on the background until then. “We’re doing one single in June of Vibrate, that won’t be on the album actually but just as another single. But there’s really good remixes on it by Noob, who did two great versions, The Bloody Beetroots, who are big Proxy fans and supporters, and one more by Sound of Stereo. Proxy has lots of fans and we do want to keep the interest up by releasing bits and pieces for now.”

Turbo Recordings are very kind to release the Bloody Beetroots Remix of Proxy’s Vibrate for free. In order to get it, you only need to sign up for the newsletter from Turbo Recordings.

When you have arranged a meeting with Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo a.k.a. The Bloody Beetroots, at first you do not really have an idea of what to expect: “How will he look like? What will he say? What will he think?”. Of course you’ve read interviews, seen pictures of half his face and seen him play live before, still it does intrigue you quite much.

The interview is done and you suddenly come to realize that Sir Bob is actually really normal, open and down-to-earth. Not at all as expected, but it felt even better. After being asked by Tommy Tea to attend the soundcheck of the band, you can hardly say no. It’s an experience that I would put in the genre “unique”, and it absolutely blows your mind. As the minutes go by and the soundcheck is done, the crowd is craving for its headliner. You can hear them going crazy; people yelling and screaming, ready to break stuff. Then you take a look at the persons who have now become your ciccio’s; Sir Bob Rifo, Tommy Tea right next to him and Edward Grinch standing a bit on the side. It’s amazing to witness this view, and to feel the attention heating up. At a certain point they get a call, saying they have to get up stage. When going with them, you will join the crowd, as the noise keeps getting louder and louder. As soon as Domino is starting to play, the crowd is going bananas and you at least have a little idea of how they must be feeling at that very moment.

While the band is playing, you look back at what you’ve experienced earlier the day. Hearing an artist’s opinion about Punk, Anarchy in relation to music, yet being fully free in the music and inspiration he has, is quite inspiring. Though when hearing these expressions, these feelings and these opinions out live right after, that is something that makes you think. There is an idea behind all what is being said and played, even if it only means that The Bloody Beetroots want to be free and doing so by making and performing music. This knowledge and these findings give you something special, an extra dimension in the world of a great artist and a great band, consisting of integer persons.

I’m proud to say that I am inspired by this interview and this day I was blessed to witness. Some experiences in life give you a good bounce, some will turn out to take you down, but some experiences will give you the feeling of being alive and having lived a whole day long. This was one of those days.
Here I present you the interview The Kool Kids did with Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo a.k.a. The Bloody Beetroots.

Why is it called “Death Crew 77″, with the emphasis on “Death Crew”?
It’s called Death Crew because it’s like the beginning of the end of The Bloody Beetroots. Basically I just want to destroy The Bloody Beetroots entirely as a of figure of speech. That’s why I’m saying “Destroy” in the Domino track for instance. It’s a new start, just like a cycle.

In what way do you think this band will bring The Bloody Beetroots to the next level?
This band is the next level. It’s a new step we’re taking. We’re not talking about working with Ableton or any of that. This is simply the next level in real life. You’ve got Edward (Grinch red.) being the drummer, I play keyboard, bass and guitar, whereas Tommy does all the effects live.

In 1998 you set up a band called “Cafeaudio” and later on a band called “Bob Rifo’s Gang”. What were these early years like?
First I had Cafeaudio, it consisted of a duo and we made Triphop. It was the first release I ever had and it was a good project. You should look up “Control Me” by Cafeaudio, it’s really good. At second I had Bob Rifo’s Gang, which was a Punk band. We were a bunch of fucked up guys and we totally destroyed it haha. I quit Bob Rifo’s Gang, because I quit the drugs and everything that went along with it. I became more responsible and then The Bloody Beetroots started.

Now back to Death Crew 77. You recently added Edward Grinch as drummer to the band. What can you tell us about him?
Edward is a pretty new character of The Bloody Beetroots. I’ve discovered him in Italy, when I asked for a drummer and through friends I got a video of this crazy guy, who turned out to be Edward. Yeah he’s great, he’s a good Punk drummer and played in several bands that have toured around the world.

What is your philosophy about your music in regards to Anarchy? Is it like “music will set you free”?
Exactly. I just want to expand the mind, let us be free in music. You can do and create everything what you want, in which you aren’t limited to certain genres or anything. Like it can only be classical or only be Punk. Music indeed sets you free and that’s where I believe in. My core intention is just to make music and nothing else. I don’t really care about other stuff and I want to be free in the music I create.

How and when was your philosophy created?
I think when I was young it already developed. I was studying music at a young age and then started to play, pop and rock and jazz. There wasn’t any switch from classical to other genres or any of such thing. The transition went well smooth.

It looked like since the release of Romborama your attitude suddenly became a whole lot rougher, as you were a lot more outspoken in interviews about your philosophy and your opinions. Can you explain this?
When I started The Bloody Beetroots I was being more responsible. At first I tried some experiments and later on I had a more clear view of what I wanted to do. I wanted more than a relationship and we are always open minded DJ’s. We look into it with a wide angle.

This summer you will be playing at big festivals like Rock Werchter and Rockness. How will the festival shows be different than the concerts in clubs and at smaller venues?
I have no idea in what way those shows will be different, and frankly I don’t really care. I don’t even know what to play tomorrow. I just live from day to day and we’ll see what happens. Tommy (Tea red.) is better known with the schedules we have. For me it’s the priority to play music and nothing else matters to me.

Will you be playing at Lowlands festival?
As I said, I don’t know about our schedule. Tommy does so you should ask him about that.
(We asked Tommy about it and got ourselves an answer)

What can you tell us about a “Best of” that’s being released at the end of the year?
Yeah, I want to release two more spares of Romborama. So those will be two EPs just like Christmas Vendetta and Domino. The short movie of Domino is the first step of a whole set of short movies, that will come with the Spares of Romborama. Besides that there will be collaborations with people like Peter Hook, Black Strobe, Mixhell and others. And after that there will be a release of best of the mixes from us. It will contain all kinds of unreleased stuff that we will put out with tracks like Dimmakmmunication and it will probably be a double CD!

What kind of stuff can we expect to be in the online Bloody Beetroots store? When can we expect it?
Well it takes a while because I have to do all the stuff myself. It’s only me and one assistant who take care of the stuff we put out, it’s not done by an industry or such. I want to produce new and quality shirts and therefore I work with the designer “Vendetta” in order to make quality t-shirts. And this just takes a while. The t-shirts are going to be something you can wear over day too, thus it can be seen as casual clothes, but it also needs to have a clear logo of The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 on it. Besides this I also want it not to be expensive. Thus you’ll be wearing quality, yet cheap shirts. I do think we talk about fashion in a bad way, as many people always tell me that fashion has to be expensive no matter what, but I reject that. Hence, I’m not doing this stuff for the money, I simply want to do the things I enjoy.

Define the message you want to spread.
Freedom. Just freedom. We don’t live in a free society, where you can do what you want whenever you want to do it, since you will always be watched and judged on your actions. Like with Romborama, all the critics and labels said like “21 songs, isn’t that way too much for an album?”. But with all the Spares together we will probably have even 40 tracks! I don’t give a fuck about what the critics say about it. I just want to spread music and want to play records. The Romborama album plus the Spares of Romborama EP’s will probably be released in a big box at the end.

I now have all these projects going and we’re already busy with the third step, which will be known in six months time.

As a conclusion, though it hasn’t been confirmed by Lowlands Festival itself, we can unofficially say that The Bloody Beetroots are going to play there. Besides this, there will be two more Spares of Romborama, a “Best of” double CD with unreleased tracks like Dimmakmmunication, collaborations with Mixhell, Peter Hook, Black Strobe and others and finally a new The Bloody Beetroots project that will be revealed in about six months time.

In a world full of critical situations and boiling discussions, one has to stand up and be heard. Acquired with a heating passion, his philosophy about the world and Anarchy does not know any boundaries. Doing this so by mingling hard music – created from the heart, resulting in pounding techno music, sharply distorted and heavy basses, screaming voices and a large dose of drugs running through the body – and powerful opinions – shared at interviews, published on his site or simply tweeted. There are people that question these outbursts, saying “it’s all an act”, along with multiple backlashes against him. Others, like young kids, love him for the show they imagine having, and the cool look it appears to have. Yet according to Bobby Rifo, there is more depth in it, and he has more reason behind the music then one might think. The band he has set up is now moving his thoughts to a new level, spreading more and more of his philosophy and way of life into the modern world; The Bloody Beetroots now come to the venues of the world with a message underlined in its heavy music.
The Bloody Beetroots present you Death Crew 77.

Born in 1977, as can be seen from the tattoo on his chest, Bob Cornelius Rifo grew up with the sound of classical music, cartoons, soundtracks and b-movies. After the classical period, the Italian composer was influenced by a genre and lifestyle completely opposite to what he previously knew; the influence of chaos: the raw energy of Punk and rockabilly via the Sex Pistols, and the wild images of comic artists such as Magnus, Benito Jacovitti and Tanino Liberatore. After first shifting from hip-hop to experimental electronica in the late 90′s, a band called “Bob Rifo’s Gang” was formed in 2005, with a combination of punk and rock. Aside from this project, Bob Rifo wanted to promote the band’s show as The Bloody Beetroots band + DJ set, whereas the DJ set would consist of Bob Rifo and the band’s manager, Tommy Tea. Alas, the alcohol and rock & roll lifestyle took its toll and the band was bounded to end. Therefore only the DJ-duo stood firm, keeping the name and the rock & roll attitude they know and love.

Their DJ set “takes on various styles as our influences really range. Rave and Punk are combined with Italo disco, techno, electro, old school and hip hop.” While DJing, the duo wear black venom masks, as they are inspired by the comics Bob Rifo loved when he was young. In a short period, The Bloody Beetroots had produced numerous remixes, Bob Rifo acting as the producer of the two. The remixes brought them a lot of fame, as some were featuring in worldwide known games. After they were signed at Dim Mak Records, home of the in the United States praised Steve Aoki, they were only to release two EP’s – “Rombo” and “Cornelius” – before they released their debut album “Romborama” in August 2009.

From that point, Bob Rifo is a lot more open and active regarding his philosophy and way of life. As you can see on the cover of Romborama, created by Italian comic artist Liboratore, “Romborama” tries to express itself not only as an album, but as a statement comparable with the things Rifo, thus The Bloody Beetroots, stands for. “Punk and Anarchy are big words for anyone to shoulder. Anyone who wants to adopt this philosophy has a big responsibility and a duty not to betray it. I try to encourage freedom and independence through the channels that are available to me.” It grabbed a lot of attention and The Bloody Beetroots were now an integral part of the Electro scene. The duo sparked more and more discussions as “Christmas Vendetta: Spares of Romborama” was released. As hits like Cornelius and Warp 1.9 struck the coast of the United States and US hipster kids got in touch with the new kool thing they found out, the Underground started making some serious accusations regarding the project, saying “it’s all an act”, “they’re repeating their formula” and “it’s nothing but bangers”.

Though now The Bloody Beetroots started their newest project called “Death Crew 77″. For this project, a third member named Edward Grinch is added. The core intention for this project is to bring back the vibe and image The Bloody Beetroots tried to create, namely a project that is a live band as well as a DJ set, and most importantly “it is a return to our roots and the new post Punk of the modern Electro era.” The influences of Punk, Rock, Anarchy, Rave and Electro are mixed into a new perspective that thrills your most inner imaginations possible. “Punk is an attitude to life and the music is just a consequence. It’s not necessarily about aggressive sounds and distorted synths. Punk is about defying the rules. I think illogically and am a nightmare for all the record companies in the world.” Not only does he have an opinion about the Punk attitude. As for Anarchy, Rifo says it’s “the search for a horizontal social structure, based on agreements made freely by free people, based on solidarity, free associations and respect for individuality and difference. By refuting law and “the system”, anarchy is in theory the concept of an ideal society in which people are evolved, intelligent and responsible enough not to need laws…. sadly, the world is governed by fools and this creates huge problems.”

With this live band performance, songs are used from the album, from their remix list as well as new tracks and remixes. In a Soulwax kind of way, all the live songs are mixed together by Tommy Tea. Next to Tommy, Bob sings and plays instruments. “I play six instruments and sing. The keyboards are 2 Nords and 2 Korgs.” Next to that Rifo also plays guitar, and finally you have Edward Grinch showing you a terrific drum performance.

On two of the three nights in The Netherlands The Kool Kids had a chance to see them, and the live performance was simply stunning to say the least. It looked like finally all the pieces fit together and the ideology and vision of The Bloody Beetroots had finally been taken into action. On the night in Rotterdam at venue the Watt, the Italian trio set up a heating live performance, where all tracks seem to go well. The crowd didn’t appear to be serious in any kind of way, seeing as young kids were in front jumping and screaming their hearts out. Indeed, the crowd looked like it was having a good party, yet didn’t seem to care much about any kind of message the band could be bringing along. This also goes for the day after in Amsterdam’s venue Paradiso, though the crowd appeared to be a lot more mature and well-known about what kind of performance they were waiting for. This directly leads to the fact that people had to wait an hour in line in order to get inside of the venue, all dead excited to see their comic heroes in a live band action. This time there was a slight difference, as after about 10 minutes all the power went down for another 20 minutes. Still though, both nights proved The Bloody Beetroots are alive and kicking, living their dreams as comic heroes, artists, DJs and live band, all with Bob Cornelius Rifo guiding the ideas and visions through his perspective.

The Bloody Beetroots’ new EP called “Domino” will be released on March the 23th. The same-titled track is the opening track of the live set. Domino “comes from a typical Venetian Carnival costume, a robe with a black hood and a white mask. I chosen this title to introduce the first BBDC77 anarco-musical army. Domino (like Xmas Vendetta) underscores the contents of Romborama. Domino is part of Romborama. Domino is a spare of Romborama. Domino is music, cinema & photography. Domino is also a revision of history. Domino destroys Nazi iconography to turn into Anarchy… pure Anarchy. I live in this world and I firmly believe in the autonomy and freedom of the individual.”

The Bloody Beetroots can now proudly present you Death Crew 77; a new level in their artistic lives and also a new level in the modern music era we live in, where live bands and DJ sets can go hand in hand, and where an opinion about Anarchy for all can be heard through ones music.

According to us, there’s a big chance that the tracklist changes from time-to-time.
Nevertheless is this the tracklist that can be played during the one-hour live show.
Tracklist and order may be incorrect.

Na de Bloody Beetroots Remix van All Leather, komt Boys Noize – Gax erin, waarna via Khonor – I Was Everything You Wanted Until You Quit de Italiaanse broeders afsluiten met The XX – Hot Like Fire.

Hier is de tracklist:
1. Vitalic — Second Lives (Bloody Beetroots Remix)
2. Boys Noize — Drummer (Bobermann Remix)
3. Refused — New Noize (Bloody Beetroots & Steve Aoki Remix )
4. The Bloody Beetroots — Warp 1977 (feat. Aoki & Bobermann)
5. The Subs — Mitsubitchi (Bobermann Remix)
6. Étienne de Crécy — You Are Welcome (Bloody Beetroots Remix)
7. Rifoki — Zombie Attack
8. All Leather — Mystery Meat (Bloody Beetroots Remix)
9. Boys Noize — Gax
10. Khonnor — I Was Everything You Wanted Until You Quit
11. The xx — Hot Like Fire

CORNELIUS from borntofilm on Vimeo.

Van de Bloody Beetroots myspace (vertaling lijkt me niet nodig):

The clip intertwines the real Bloody Beetroots life style with the oniric dimension of the nightmare. A tale without any redemption, an absolute neorealism under strobe lights, an out-and-out social piece, a vortex without ideology…practically the era of the rotten apples without any dialogue.
Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo, the satyr, the man without face, the iconoclast, lives his umpteenth reincarnation and he does it trying to escape from a clumsy dream inhabited by vampirized characters (Tommy Tea, Steve Aoki, Mon Colonel, Crookers, LA Riots etc.etc.). It is a noir back-of-the-scene activity, where the maximum aspiration is the flash of a camera from the social blogs. Editing and photography follow the rhetoric and the fil rouge of “Smack My Bitch Up” from Prodigy, where the dodecaphonic histerya of the international parties shot by Mark “Cobrasnake” is added.

2.55 MINUTES OF PURE UNCONSCIOUSNESS

Cornelius is not only a videoclip but an elaborate products combining within itself: music, literature, arts and fashion.
A thorough social piece of work in various acts, with unvarnished aspects
of a reality that dwells the nights.
Foremost character, only leading dream actor, even though in flesh and bones: Cornelius- Rifo, the alterego of the characther of Moorcock.
